If your waste is fly-tipped, the fine comes to you
Most people assume that if a clearance company dumps their waste in a lane, that's the company's problem. It isn't.
Under the household waste duty of care, you are responsible for making sure your waste is handed to someone legally authorised to take it. When fly-tipped waste is investigated, it gets traced back through the paperwork inside it, old letters, bank statements, address labels, to the household it came from. Councils in England can issue significant fixed penalty notices of up to householder who handed it over, or prosecute instead.
This is also why the cheapest quote is sometimes the cheapest for a reason. Licensed disposal costs money. An operator who isn't paying for it can quote below everyone else, and the saving is only a saving until the waste turns up somewhere it shouldn't.
Checking takes a minute:
- Ask for the waste carrier registration number, not "are you licensed", the number itself.
- Look it up free on the Environment Agency's public register.
- Ask for written confirmation of where your waste is going.
